Kidnapping of patty Hearst
The SLA knew they needed to respond to the arrest of Remiro and Little so they began to plan their next action. They decided they would need to kidnap an important figure in order to negotiate the release of their incarcerated members.
They chose Patricia Campbell Hearst, the 19-year-old newspaper heiress, socialite and actress.
On the evening of the 4th of Febuary, 1974, they forced their way into her Berkley home, where three members of the SLA beat her fiancé and abducted her. A number of shots were fired during the attack and in the subsequent getaway, and the bullets were later found to be filled with cyanide, leading the police to recognize that it was the work of the SLA.
The SLA used social media to publicize any and all statements and requests to the public and to the Hearst family. First they sent a letter to the Berkeley radio station KPFA. It was a “communiqué” signed by the SLA, and was titled “a warrant for the arrest of Patricia Campbell Hearst”. The letter also warned that “all communication from this court must be published in full in all newspapers and all other forms of media.”
